Looking to take your first cruise—or try a new kind of sailing experience? From
massive ocean liners to cozy river ships and indulgent luxury journeys, there’s truly a
cruise for every traveler. But how do you choose?
As a travel advisor (and cruise enthusiast!), I’ve explored the oceans and now set my sights on river and luxury cruising. In this post, I’ll walk you through the different cruise types, share personal insights, and help you determine which option is the perfect fit for you.

Ocean Cruises: The Classic Floating Resort
Best for: First-time cruisers, families, variety-seekers, multi-destination travelers
Why I love them: This is where my cruise journey began. Ocean cruises offer unmatched entertainment, a wide range of destinations, and excellent value. On my last Caribbean cruise, I caught a Broadway-style show, dined in restaurants like Hibachi, lounged on my balcony, and only had to unpack once!
Beyond the onboard thrills, ocean cruises open doors to a world of destinations, from the sun-drenched beaches of the Caribbean and the majestic glaciers of Alaska to the historical wonders of the Mediterranean and the exotic landscapes of Southeast Asia. Whether you're looking for a mega-ship with all the bells and whistles, a mid-sized vessel offering a balanced experience, or a smaller ship focused on curated itineraries and unique ports, the ocean cruise category truly has a vessel to match your travel style.
Key Features:
Big ships (2,000+ passengers)
Entertainment galore (shows, water slides, casinos, etc.)
Dozens of dining options
Great for all ages
Considerations:
Can feel crowded, especially during peak seasons
Lowest fares often exclude drinks, excursions, and gratuities
Next up for me is an Ocean Cruise sailing the Mediterranean this summer—I can’t wait to blog all about it!

River Cruises: Intimate, Immersive, and Elegant
Best for: Culture lovers, couples, relaxed travelers, scenic seekers
Why I’m excited to try them: River cruises are about connection—both with the destination and fellow travelers. I’ve been eyeing the Danube for a while now and am finally planning my first river adventure! I hesitated because of the perception that they cater to older passengers. While river cruising once held a reputation for catering to a more mature demographic, the reality today is a vibrant mix of ages and multigenerational families drawn to the relaxed pace and culturally rich experiences. Many river lines now offer active excursions like cycling tours and guided hikes, as well as themed cruises centered around food, wine, or even music, attracting a younger and more adventurous crowd.
The beauty of river cruising lies in its ability to offer a deeper connection with the destinations you visit, providing unparalleled access to inland treasures often missed by larger vessels. This desire for authentic experiences is resonating with travelers of all ages who are seeking a more immersive and less frenetic way to explore the vineyard-lined banks of the Rhine, the ancient temples along the Nile, or the quaint villages dotting the Mekong Delta, offering a unique perspective far from the typical tourist crowds.
Key Features:
Small ships (100–200 passengers)
Dock in the heart of cities and towns
Scenic views from your cabin
Often, more inclusive pricing
Considerations:
Fewer onboard activities and entertainment
Somewhat higher price point
Slower pace and quieter atmosphere

Luxury Cruises: All-Inclusive Elegance
Best for: Travelers celebrating something special, seeking comfort and convenience, or
craving high-touch service
The investment in a luxury cruise often translates to exceptional value through its inclusive nature. Imagine stepping onboard knowing that your gourmet meals, premium beverages, curated shore excursions, and even gratuities are often bundled into the fare, allowing for a truly worry-free experience. While the initial cost might seem higher, consider the unparalleled level of personalized service, the spacious suites that feel like floating boutique hotels, and the access to smaller, more exclusive ports that larger ships simply can't reach. For many, the elevated experience justifies the premium.
Why I’m planning one soon: Luxury cruises offer an unmatched level of service and ease. With excursions, drinks, gratuities, and even airfare often included, the experience is seamless—and when I did the math, it wasn’t as much of a leap as I thought.
Key Features:
Smaller ships with spacious suites
Gourmet dining, often with Michelin-level chefs
High staff-to-guest ratio = impeccable service
Access to unique ports
Considerations:
Higher upfront cost
Fewer entertainment options (focus is on quality and relaxation)
Specialty Cruises: Finding Your Tribe on the Water
Expedition; Adventure Cruises
Best for: Nature lovers, active travelers, bucket-list explorers
Think: Antarctica, the Galápagos, remote Alaska
Features: Expert guides, educational programming, hiking/kayaking-focused
excursions
Imagine kayaking alongside seals in Antarctica with expert naturalists aboard a ship like those offered by Hurtigruten or exploring the unique wildlife of the Galápagos Islands with Lindblad Expeditions, where education and conservation are at the forefront.
Adults-Only Cruises
Best for: Couples, solo travelers, friend groups
Features: Child-free environment, elevated dining, nightlife.
For couples seeking a romantic getaway or friends looking for an uninterrupted escape, lines like Virgin Voyages offer a stylish and sophisticated child-free environment with innovative dining and vibrant nightlife.
Family: Theme Cruises
Best for: Families, multi-gen trips, fan communities
Features: Kids clubs, water parks, and themed experiences (like Disney or music festivals
at sea)
From meeting your favorite characters on a Disney Cruise Line adventure to enjoying themed sailings centered around music festivals or specific fandoms, these cruises create unforgettable memories for families and those who share passions.
How to Choose Your Perfect Cruise
Ask yourself:
1. Budget: What’s included—and what’s not?
2. Destination: Do you want islands, inland cities, or remote regions?
3. Atmosphere: Constant activity or quiet elegance?
4. Ship size: Big resort at sea or intimate boutique experience?
5. Travel crew: Solo? Family? Friends? Different lines fit different groups!
